Parakeet, the engine you start with, recognises 25 European languages and works out which one you are speaking on its own. If your language is not among them, switch to WhisperKit under Dictation Settings, Engine, and download its model once.
You can also lock your language. On Parakeet, that keeps a German dictation free of stray Greek or Cyrillic letters. On WhisperKit, naming your language gives higher accuracy than auto-detect. Both engines run on your Mac, so your voice does not leave it.
The default. Faster, 25 European languages, detects which one you speak.
99+ languages for everything else, as a one-time download.
Auto-detect handles one language at a time, so switch between sentences rather than inside one.

British spelling on request.
Both speech engines write English with American spelling. Choose English (UK) as your dictation language and EnviousWispr gives you British spelling instead, in dictation and in Transcribe a File, with AI polish on or off. The spelling is checked again after polish, which catches American spelling a polish model puts back.
Words whose spelling depends on meaning, such as "program", "check" and "license", are left as you said them. A name in the middle of a sentence and your custom words are kept exactly as written.
Addresses and links,
said the way you say them.
With your dictation language set to French, Spanish, Polish, Dutch, German, Russian, Portuguese or Italian, email addresses, web addresses and codes said with that language’s words for “at”, “dot” and “slash” come out written, accents included.
Filler removal reads your language too. It leaves “er” alone in German, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish, and “um” in German, Portuguese, Slovenian and Croatian, because those are real words there.
The app speaks
German too.
EnviousWispr’s own menus, settings and messages come in English and German. Pick one under App Settings, Appearance, Language, or leave it on System default to follow your Mac. The language you dictate in is a separate setting, so you can use the app in German and dictate in English, or the other way round.
Questions people ask
Which languages can I dictate in on a Mac with EnviousWispr?
EnviousWispr, a free dictation app for Mac, starts with the Parakeet engine, which recognises 25 European languages and detects which one you are speaking. For a language Parakeet does not cover, switch to the WhisperKit engine in Dictation Settings, Engine, which supports 99+ languages.
How do I get British spelling when I dictate on a Mac?
In Dictation Settings, Engine, switch off Auto-detect language, click Change and choose English (UK). Your dictation then comes out as colour, centre and organise, with AI polish on or off, and in Transcribe a File too.
Does EnviousWispr translate what I say?
No. It writes what you said in the language you said it. AI polish cleans up grammar and filler words but does not translate, so dictating in French returns French text.
Can I use the EnviousWispr app itself in German?
Yes. Its menus, settings and messages come in English and German. Choose a language in App Settings, Appearance, Language, then relaunch. System default follows your Mac. This is separate from the language you dictate in.
