Start a Dictation on Android
Use the floating bubble, the recording pill, the Quick Settings tile and the microphone button to dictate on Android.
On Android you start a dictation from the floating bubble that appears beside the keyboard. You can tap it and tap again to finish, or hold it while you talk and let go to finish.
Tap or hold the bubble
The bubble appears whenever a text box is active, just above the keyboard on the right edge unless you moved it.
| How you start | How you finish | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tap the bubble | Tap the check | Longer thoughts, hands free while you talk |
| Hold the bubble | Let go | Short messages |
When you tap, the bubble opens into a recording pill with a clock, a sound meter, an X to cancel and a check to finish. When you hold, the pill shows a recording mark and the sound meter until you let go. A recording stops at 10 minutes, with a warning when less than a minute is left.
Move or hide the bubble
Move it. Drag the bubble. It snaps to the nearer edge of the screen and stays there. Dragging never starts a recording.
Hide it. Drag the bubble onto Drop to hide. It stays hidden until the next text box you open.
Change its look. Open Settings, then Appearance > Floating button, and pick Smoke, Clear or Bare.
Other ways to start
Quick Settings tile. Add the EnviousWispr tile to your Quick Settings panel. Tap it to start and tap it again to stop. Because the tile is not tied to a text box, your words go to the clipboard, ready to paste, or to History if you turned Auto-copy to clipboard off.
The microphone button. Inside the app, tap the microphone button at the top of the screen.
While a dictation runs, the notification shows EnviousWispr is listening with Stop and Cancel, if you allowed notifications.
How you know it worked
Your finished words appear in the text box after the pill closes. If they do not, see Text Did Not Appear on Android.
