EnviousWispr is a free, open-source dictation application for macOS. You hold a keybind, speak into your microphone, and your spoken words appear as written text in whatever application you are currently using.
How you use it
You dictate by holding a keybind while your cursor rests in a text field.
- Click into a text field. Click inside any window or document where you want your words to appear.
- Hold your keybind and talk. Press and hold the keybind down, then speak your thoughts out loud.
- Release the keybind. Let go of the key when you finish speaking. The transcribed text appears at your cursor a moment later.
What you get
EnviousWispr gives you a full dictation setup on macOS without asking for payment or an account.
- It costs nothing. There is no subscription fee, no user account requirement, and no trial period. The entire application code is open source and licensed under the GPLv3.
- Your voice stays on your Mac. Your speech is transcribed into text entirely on your own device. The audio recording never leaves your Mac.
- It works anywhere you can type. You can dictate into Slack, Mail, Notion, VS Code, Google Docs, Terminal, or any other text field on your Mac.
- It lives in your menu bar. The application runs quietly from your menu bar. There is no Dock icon and no separate window to keep open on your desktop.
- AI can tidy up what you said. An optional polish step cuts filler words like “um” and fixes grammar and punctuation. This is enabled by default when you install the app, and you can switch which AI performs the polish or turn the feature off entirely.
