Sounds and Appearance

These settings change how EnviousWispr looks and sounds while you use it. Recording sounds, the theme, the recording bar, the Dock icon and the app’s language never change what you dictate or how accurately it is transcribed.

Turn off the recording sounds

Go to Dictation Settings > Chimes and switch off Play recording chimes.

A short sound plays when EnviousWispr starts and stops listening. It helps if you dictate without looking at the screen, or you are unsure whether EnviousWispr registered your keybind. This setting is on from the start, using the Whisper Tick pairing.

To choose a different sound, select any of the sound pairings on the Chimes tab and click the preview button to hear it first.

Switch between light and dark mode

EnviousWispr follows your macOS appearance setting by default. To override that, go to App Settings > Appearance and set Theme to Light or Dark. The theme then stays fixed, whatever your Mac is set to.

Move the recording bar

The recording bar shows you when EnviousWispr is listening. To choose where it sits, go to Dictation Settings > Recording Pill and use Position on screen to place it at the top or the bottom of your screen.

You can also drag the bar to any position while it is visible. That placement lasts for the current dictation only. The next dictation returns to the position you chose in Settings.

Change how the recording bar looks

Go to Dictation Settings > Recording Pill and click a design in the Style row. There are three: Capsule, Reading Well and Level Rail.

Reading Well shows your words as you speak, so it goes together with Live Preview. If a design is greyed out, the line under the row says why.

Hide the Dock icon

EnviousWispr shows in the Dock and in the app switcher (Command-Tab) like any Mac app, and its window opens in front of your other windows.

To keep it in the menu bar alone, go to App Settings > Appearance and switch off Show app in Dock. With that off, the Dock icon appears only while an EnviousWispr window is open. The menu bar icon always stays, so you can always open EnviousWispr from it.

Change the app’s language

EnviousWispr’s menus, settings and messages come in English and German. Go to App Settings > Appearance and pick a language in the Language row:

• System default follows the language your Mac uses.
• English or Deutsch uses that language no matter what your Mac is set to.

EnviousWispr then shows EnviousWispr uses the new language after it relaunches. with a Relaunch to apply button. The button is unavailable while a dictation or file transcription is in progress, so a relaunch never cuts off your work.

This only changes the words EnviousWispr shows you. The language you dictate in is a separate setting. See dictating in other languages.

Stop music from playing while I dictate

What happens to music, a podcast or a video while you dictate (turn it down, mute it or pause it) is set on the Microphone tab of Dictation Settings. It can quiet the sound around you, which keeps background audio out of your recording. See Choosing Your Microphone.
